When a car AC stops blowing cold in Dubai, a regas is often the first thing suggested. But a regas is only half the story — if the gas leaked out, it will leak out again unless the cause is fixed.

What a regas should cost

ServiceEstimated price (AED)
AC regas + basic check150 - 400
Leak test (UV/electronic)100 - 300
Cabin filter60 - 200
Condenser replacement500 - 1,500

Prices vary by car and part source. European cars sit at the higher end.

Signs you need more than a regas

  • AC cold for a few weeks, then warm again (a leak)
  • Cooling only while driving, weak at idle (fan/condenser)
  • Oily residue around AC fittings
  • Unusual noise when the AC switches on (compressor)

Why leaks matter in Dubai

Dubai's heat makes the AC system work harder, so a small leak shows up quickly as poor cooling. Fixing the leak — not just refilling gas — is what actually solves the problem and stops repeat costs.

What a proper AC service includes

A regas done properly is a machine process, not a bottle and a hose. Knowing what the machine actually does makes it much easier to tell a real service from a top-up.

The old refrigerant is recovered from the system rather than vented, and the machine weighs what it takes out — which immediately tells the technician how much was missing and therefore whether there is a leak worth chasing. The system is then held under vacuum for a period, which both removes moisture and acts as a leak check: a vacuum that does not hold means the system will not hold gas either. Fresh refrigerant is then charged in by weight to the quantity the manufacturer specifies, with the correct amount of the correct compressor oil, and the vent temperature and both service-port pressures are checked before the car is handed back.

That whole process takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour on most cars. A five-minute top-up from a bottle is a different thing being sold under the same name.

Why the cheapest regas often costs more

A very low headline price generally means the recovery, vacuum and weighed recharge have been skipped in favour of adding gas until the pressure looks about right. There are two costs to that.

The first is accuracy. Charging by pressure rather than by weight makes overcharging easy, and an overcharged system cools worse than a correctly charged one while putting extra load on the compressor. The second is the leak. Refrigerant is not consumed by use, so a system that needed gas lost it somewhere, and gas added without finding the leak simply leaves again on the same timescale.

The practical test is to ask what happens if the AC is warm again in a month. A workshop that has weighed the recovery, held vacuum and recharged to specification can tell you what it found and stand behind the work. A workshop that topped it up cannot.

Which refrigerant your car takes

Part of the price difference between two otherwise identical quotes is simply which gas the car uses. Older vehicles generally run R134a; newer ones use R1234yf, which needs different equipment and different service ports and costs considerably more per kilogram.

The label under the bonnet states which type your car takes and the exact charge weight. A workshop should check it before quoting, and the two systems must never be mixed or cross-charged. If a quote seems high for a newer car, the refrigerant type is often the whole explanation.

When the problem is not the gas at all

A regas gets suggested for almost any AC complaint, but several common symptoms have nothing to do with refrigerant level and will not improve after one.

A musty smell when the AC starts is the clearest example. That is microbial growth on a damp evaporator, which is common here because the AC runs almost year-round and the evaporator never fully dries. The fix is a cabin filter and an evaporator clean or treatment, at a fraction of the cost of anything involving refrigerant. Running the AC on fresh air rather than recirculation for the last few minutes of a drive helps it dry and slows the smell coming back.

Weak airflow at every fan speed is another. If the vents feel gentle rather than warm, suspect a blocked cabin filter or a failing blower motor before the cooling side. Air that is cold at the face vents but not at the feet, or that will not switch between them, usually points to a blend or mode flap actuator — a mechanical fault behind the dashboard that no amount of gas will touch. And cooling that is fine on the move but fades in traffic points at the condenser fans or a dust-packed condenser rather than the charge.

It is worth describing the symptom precisely when you ask for a quote. 'Blows cold then goes warm after twenty minutes' and 'never gets properly cold at all' lead to different diagnoses and very different bills.
