What to budget
European cars cost more to service because of parts and oil grade. A major service can run from around AED 1,400 to AED 2,500+ depending on the model. Comparing two or three specialist quotes for the same scope is the best way to control cost.
How to tell a real specialist from a general workshop
Almost every workshop in Dubai will accept a BMW or a Mercedes. Rather fewer are equipped to diagnose one properly, and the difference shows up on the bill when a fault has to be found rather than simply replaced.
The clearest signal is the diagnostic equipment. Brand-level systems read every module, show live data and coding, and perform the service functions a European car needs — retracting electronic parking brakes to change rear pads, bleeding a modern ABS unit, registering a new battery to the charging system, resetting adaptations after a repair. A generic code reader shows a fault code and little else, and a workshop working from codes alone tends to replace parts until the light goes out, which you pay for.
After that, ask about the people and the process. Technicians with dealer or manufacturer training on your make. A parts supply that can source genuine or OEM-equivalent components rather than only the cheapest available. And a willingness to explain what the live data showed rather than just naming a part.
What the heat does to these cars specifically
The common faults on European cars in this climate are not random. They cluster around heat, and knowing that helps you read a quote.
Cooling systems suffer most. Plastic thermostat housings, expansion tanks and coolant pipes become brittle over years of heat cycling and eventually weep or crack, and a coolant leak on these engines is worth treating urgently rather than topping up. Rubber and plastic elsewhere ages the same way, which is why valve-cover gaskets, hoses and suspension bushes appear on service estimates here earlier than the mileage suggests.
Electronics and sensors are the second cluster, partly from heat in the engine bay and partly from the sheer number of modules on these cars. Air suspension, common on Range Rover and on some Mercedes and Audi models, is a third: compressors and air springs work harder in heat and are an expensive surprise if they fail without warning. Stop-start city driving finishes the list, wearing brakes faster than motorway use would.
Parts: genuine, OEM or aftermarket
On European cars this choice moves the total more than anywhere else, so it is worth being deliberate rather than accepting whatever the quote assumed.
Genuine parts come in the manufacturer's packaging at the manufacturer's price. OEM-equivalent parts are made by the same supplier that produced the original for the factory, sold in that supplier's own box, and are typically meaningfully cheaper for the same component. Aftermarket ranges from very good to poor and is worth accepting selectively rather than by default.
A reasonable approach on an out-of-warranty car is genuine or OEM for anything safety-critical or hard to access, OEM-equivalent for routine consumables, and aftermarket only where a workshop you trust recommends a specific brand. Ask for the quote to state which category each part falls into — when two specialist quotes differ substantially, this is usually why.
